Winter in Michigan means salt, sand, and slush getting tracked in on boots — all of it abrasive and, in the case of salt, capable of dulling finishes over time if it’s not cleaned up. Spring is a good time for a deeper clean and a walk-through inspection — check for any gaps, loose transitions, or spots where winter moisture may have gotten under baseboards or thresholds. It’s also worth confirming your humidifier or dehumidifier settings as the season shifts, since sudden humidity swings are harder on wood-based flooring than gradual ones.

Summer humidity is the flip side of the winter dryness problem, particularly for solid hardwood, which can expand slightly in high humidity. Keeping indoor humidity in a relatively stable range — many manufacturers suggest roughly 35–55% — helps minimize the expansion and contraction that drives long-term wear on wood floors.

Fall is the natural time to reapply any recommended protective treatments and to double-check door mats and furniture pads before the next round of winter foot traffic begins. None of this is complicated, but doing it consistently by season is what actually extends a floor’s life — most flooring problems build up gradually rather than happening all at once.
