Some floating floors — click-lock LVP or laminate in particular — are genuinely designed for DIY installation in small, simple, rectangular rooms with a subfloor that’s already in good shape. For a motivated homeowner, this is often a reasonable weekend project.

Glue-down or nail-down installation, tile work, anything involving subfloor leveling or repair, and larger or irregularly shaped rooms are where professional installation earns its cost — mistakes in these areas (uneven transitions, gaps that open up over time, improperly leveled subfloors) are expensive to fix after the fact and can shorten the life of the floor significantly.

A middle-ground option worth asking about: some installers will do the trickier parts of a job (subfloor prep, cuts around stairs or fixtures) while a homeowner handles the straightforward field-laying themselves, which can bring costs down without taking on the highest-risk parts of the job solo.
