Basements present a specific challenge: below-grade spaces are more prone to humidity, minor moisture seepage, and temperature swings than the rest of the home. Fully waterproof luxury vinyl plank is generally the strongest choice, since its solid core won’t swell or warp if it’s exposed to moisture.

Tile is another solid basement option and handles moisture well, though it can feel cold without supplemental heating. Solid hardwood is generally not recommended below grade at all, since it’s more vulnerable to the humidity swings basements are prone to; engineered hardwood tolerates it somewhat better but still isn’t the top choice for a consistently damp space.

Whatever material you choose, addressing any underlying moisture issue in the basement itself — not just picking a moisture-resistant floor — is the more important step long-term.
