Not all vinyl plank flooring is created equal here, and the label matters. True waterproof luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is built with a solid, non-porous core that won’t swell or warp even if water sits on it for a while — that makes it a strong option for kitchens, bathrooms, mudrooms, and basements.

Water-resistant vinyl, by contrast, can handle spills and everyday moisture if cleaned up promptly, but isn’t rated to withstand standing water or high humidity over time the way fully waterproof products are. The construction (and the core material specifically) is what determines which category a product falls into — not just the marketing on the box.

If a moisture-prone room is part of your project, it’s worth confirming with your installer that the specific product being quoted is rated waterproof, not just water-resistant, especially for basements or below-grade spaces.
