Southeast Michigan homes go through real seasonal extremes — humid summers followed by dry, cold winters — and that swing matters more for flooring than many homeowners realize. Solid hardwood is the most sensitive to these swings, since it’s milled from a single piece of wood that expands and contracts as a unit. Engineered hardwood handles it noticeably better, thanks to its layered core, which is part of why it’s often the safer choice for Michigan homes even when the look you want is a traditional hardwood floor. Whatever hardwood you choose, giving new planks 48–72 hours to acclimate to your home’s indoor humidity before installation is a step worth insisting on — skipping it is one of the more common causes of gapping or buckling months later.

Below-grade spaces add another layer to the equation. Michigan basements are prone to seasonal moisture and humidity swings, which is why hardwood is generally not recommended there at all — a fully waterproof material like luxury vinyl plank is the safer long-term choice for basements, mudrooms, and other moisture-prone rooms, regardless of what you choose for the rest of the home.

None of this means hardwood is off the table for a Michigan home — it just means material choice and installation practices matter more here than in a milder climate, and it’s worth discussing your specific rooms with your installer rather than assuming one material fits every space in the house.
